At last, after 14+ hours of painting, the Exarch from the shrine of Web of infinity is done. If you just tuned in to my blog, here are the links to my previous exarch WIP:
This is probably the most asked question in this project, how the heck did I do the honeycomb pattern? Well, that's easy. Let me show you how I did it.
The first thing to do is cover the surface with the midcolor; so I started to coat the carapace with orange - make sure to use thin coats to avoid that pesky brush stroke until you get that flat, even coat.
Once the surface is dry, it's time to draw the pattern. I used a lighter shade of orange for my pattern by adding a lil bit of yellow, white and orange. I added a glaze medium - to avoid the breaking of piments when the paint is thinned down - untile I get my usual conistency for my glaze recipe. I just drew the horizontal pattern first, see picture below:
Since I'm using a thinned down paint, I just repeatedly draw the pattern until I get my desired opacity. I connected the edges of my pattern to form the honeycomb. Since I want that blended/faded effect, the direction where I drag the brush, pushing the pigments toward the center of the pattern.

The final effect that I want |
I did the same procedure with the highlights, of course adding white and a little bit yellow, until I get the contrast that I want. And then I finished it with a glaze of my midtone to smoothen the blend between my shadows, midtone, and highlights.
I then applied thin coats of white to the head until I get a clean, stroke-less surface.
I added a glowing effect on the eye, using a very thinned down orange, dragging the brush towards the eye, again using the glazing technique. Once done, I edge highlighted the upper and lower lids of the eye just to get that good OSL effect.
This is how thin my paint is when I applied the glow on the eyes. |
Voilà, and here is the finished product....
Below are the minis that I'm planning to finish this month. The Farseer will be my entry for the IPMS painting event while the other 3 will be a part of my force in this upcoming GT.
