A very gorgeous looking guy painting an awesome lookin mini. |
I was so lazy the past few days and wasn't able to look for something to inspire me to paint. Most of the time I just spent precious minutes looking at the mini, trying to jump start my mood; which unfortunately didn't work.
So I went to watch FIBA Asean championships between Philippines and Jordan, not anymore hoping to paint. Then that 'Spark' happened when Philippines won against Jordan. A very unlikely source of inspiration, I went to paint my exarch and was able to finish the blue part of the mini.
Basically, I enhanced the contrast using glazing painting with the brush. I started to darken the shadow, slowly blending it with the ones that I airbrushed. From my midtone color of VMC blue green, I added VMC dark sea blue, adding more dark sea blue to the mix until I reach up to pure dark sea blue. Shadows are not black, if you play airsoft or has military background, you can easily spot an opponent in black compare to the ones wearing midnight blue. So once I'm done withe shadows, I'm now going with the highlights.
Same process, adding white to my midtone, and a complementary color - These are the colors adjacent to the color you use. So since I used a bluish color, I just added just a pinch of green plus white for every successive highlights to give a rich color until I reach to almost pure white.
After that, I glazed the whole blue part with the midtone color to have smooher blend, and did some retouch to get that contrast I was looking for. Then, I just simply brush it with matte varnish to make sure the paint won't easily be rubbed off.
Total time spent: 3 hours
